Argentina is one of the most popular Latin American countries known for its beautiful landcapes, rich lively culture, and its powerful football factories producing legends like Diego Maradona and current stars like Lionel Messi of Barcelona FC but they are also producers of the finest and purest wool found in the world today.
The city of Trelew in the province of Chubut produces a unique climate that is never too hot is the summer and does not freeze in winter. This area in the Patagonia region of Argentina which stretches to Chile as well is known for its barren plateau and high peaks that are up to 100 metres high. This desert climate mainly produces low grass and scrubs which are ideal for grazing sheep which number in the tens of millions in this region of Argentina.
There are two main sheep breeds raised and grown in Trelew which are Merino and Corriedale. Corriedale is a cross between merino-lincoln breeds, this particular staple of wool is very strong and dense and diverse enough to be used for various products like athletic wear, moisture pads, even comfort layers for our Soma Organic Mattresses and foundations.
Organic Certification
Our Soma wool has organic accreditation from GOTS (Global Organic Textiles Standard). To receive certification for an ‘organic grade’ textile the the fibre material must be 95% certified organic in accordance with their standards for the organic production of wool. The use of parasiticides(insecticides) and other synthetic pesticides are strictly prohibited. The use of synthetic hormones and genetic engineering is forbidden, the feed and forage must be certified organic during gestation.(basically the sheep are fed organically during pregnancy). Lastly producers of organic wool must not exceed the natural carrying capacity of the land(Patagonia region is so vast overgrazing is simply just not possible which makes it ideal for raising sheep).
