Argentina is one of the most popular Latin American countries known for its beautiful landcapes, rich lively culture, and its powerful football factories producing legends like Diego Maradona and current stars like Lionel Messi of Barcelona FC but they are also producers of the finest and purest wool found in the world today.

The city of Trelew in the province of Chubut produces a unique climate that is never too hot is the summer and does not freeze in winter. This area in the Patagonia region of Argentina which stretches to Chile as well is known for its barren plateau and high peaks that are up to 100 metres high. This desert climate mainly produces low grass and scrubs which are ideal for grazing sheep which number in the tens of millions in this region of Argentina.

There are two main sheep breeds raised and grown in Trelew which are Merino and Corriedale. Corriedale is a cross between merino-lincoln breeds, this particular staple of wool is very strong and dense and diverse enough to be used for various products like athletic wear, moisture pads, even comfort layers for our Soma Organic Mattresses and foundations.

Organic Certification

Our Soma wool has organic accreditation from GOTS (Global Organic Textiles Standard). To receive certification for an ‘organic grade’ textile the the fibre material must be 95% certified organic in accordance with their standards for the organic production of wool. The use of parasiticides(insecticides) and other synthetic pesticides are strictly prohibited. The use of synthetic hormones and genetic engineering is forbidden, the feed and forage must be certified organic during gestation.(basically the sheep are fed organically during pregnancy). Lastly producers of organic wool must not exceed the natural carrying capacity of the land(Patagonia region is so vast overgrazing is simply just not possible which makes it ideal for raising sheep).

Why Natural Rubber (Natural latex) Mattress?

Our goal has always been to seek out the most natural and chemical free products to enhance our customer’s sleep experience. With this in mind our natural rubber used in our Soma Certified Organic Mattress Collection is derived from some of the finest grade of Natural Rubber grown in Malaysian plantations with no herbicides used due to sheep who graze nearby to control growth on each plantation. Our natural rubber contains an anti-bacterial substance which is naturally anti dust mite due to the absorbency and moisture regulation similar in the properties of our organic cotton and wool products as.

Natural Manufacturing Methods Only

The latex sap/milk is manufactured by tapping the rubber tree otherwise known as Hevea Brasiliensis. Our latex sap is then taken to a location near the plantations to be made into natural rubber sheets by the afternoon to avoid destabilization of the milk after sitting for too long. This procedure ensures the purity of the product by baking the sap or latex milk into cores within 12 hours and avoids the use of chemicals and synthetic materials used in many production methods in Europe and North America. Finally our injection system only uses air, natural soap, and natural vulcanization agents to ensure Soma Organic Mattresses’ customers are sleeping on the highest quality organic bed possible. This pure substance then biodegrades naturally after a long lifespan lasting more than 20 years.

The Certification

Our certification for our natural rubber comes from Eco Institut of Germany. One of the most respected independent accredited testing facilities to ensure that the latex cores are free of chemical out-gassings and emissions. With this certification our customers can rest assure that a Soma Organic Mattress product has been tested for purity and authenticity.

Each one of Soma’s natural rubber cores are individually covered in an organic muslin which is like a very thin organic cotton sock which protects the product while allowing breathability at the same time. The fleeces are only washed with a vegetable based soap in hot water that has not been treated in any way ensuring that 4 to 6% of the lanolin remains intact which is a natural dust repellent.

The Zilvereen

The Zilvereen is a 6.5 inch organic mattress with 3 different comfort levels that can be customized for either side of the bed to cater to the needs of each sleeping partner. The cover is a double envelope made from 100% organic cotton velour and 100% pure virgin Texel wool that provides more additional comfort in a moisture resistant layer keeping the humidity at bay allowing you to sleep more soundly. Combine this mattress with a S 200 foundation from Green Sleep to complete a truly unique sleep system that will support and alleviate pressure from those aching muscles and joints. The S 200 foundation combines supportive slats with flexible dowels made from kiln dried untreated poplar. The foundation is covered in organic cotton and pure virgin wool.

The new pillows from Magniflex are all covered in 100% natural linen which is a textile made from plant fibers and when produced into a fabric is very durable, highly breathable, and absorbent which will keep moisture away form the skin and pillow surface. This hygienic cover can be washed whenever required and is 2 to 3 times tougher than cotton.

To enhance the sleep experience the linen fabric cover is available for the standard, wave, comfort, and ortho massage cores. The core is made form Magniflex’s Geo-Memory Magnifoam and also uses aloe extracts to guarantee that the pillow is cool and dry. The final touch to this new innovative and luxurious pillow line is the micro airyform design which allows air to flow through the middle of the pillow surface allowing each individual a good night’s sleep free of moisture, perspiration, and allergens.
